Harvest Time

I joined the students, parents and staff of a local elementary at their school rice field to harvest the crop we seeded back in May. Rain from the day prior made the field muddier than usual, constantly sticking and eating up the kids' boots as they slowly made their way across the paddy cutting stalks by hand. Modern day walking-type and driving-type reapers can make quick work of a field by combining harvest and threshing in a single process. We carried bundles back to the thresher where it separated rice from stalk and produced enough to fill a small truck bed. The rice here will be used to make rice cakes (mochi) at another school event in the coming winter.
